More than an Athlete: Zach Steiner

More than an Athlete: Zach Steiner

Apparently yesterday was National Student-Athlete Day. The Ohio State University’s ACEL Department shared this nice post featuring their three student-athletes. One of the students is my brother, Zach Steiner. (Wrestling profile)

Whenever someone asks me about Zach, wrestling hardly ever comes up. Or at least not at first. There is so much more to share. One being his desire to encourage and uplift the next generation into leaders. As an agricultural communication major and smalltown farm kid, he also has a passion to educate consumers on where their food comes from (it doesn’t magically just show up at the grocery store.)

A few weeks ago, I texted Zach and his roommate, NCAA National Champion, Nathan Tomasello, asking them to write a letter to one of the 4th graders I tutor. My student is from North Carolina and had recently won the state wrestling championship.

letters RECEIVED in less than an hour:

Zach’s Letter

Zach’s Letter

Nathan Tomasello’s Letter (NCAA CHAMPION)

Nathan Tomasello’s Letter (NCAA CHAMPION)

My student and his family couldn’t believe it when I sent him the letters. He immediately asked his dad to print them out so he could hang them up.

Now with school being done from home, I’m working with this student’s little brother. Yesterday he told me he has really been struggling with his homework because he didn’t have a letter of encouragement from an Ohio State Wrestler. He said that receiving a letter would really help him with him math. I told him I would see what I could do. (THIS is why i LOVE tutoring so much! Impacting lives one good lesson at a time.)

These are the stories I love to share when someone asks me about Zach. You can watch his first “big time” interview here.

Today I am extra proud to be an Ohio State Wrestling fan! Go Bucks! #InThisTogetherOhio
